Basketball Media News & Notes: Van Gundy, Barkley, ESPN



Here are some brief blurbs of basketball coverage to wrap up the week:

Former Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy has signed on with NBC Sports Net. The former coach will work the Navy-Marine Corp Classic contest between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Florida Gators aboard the USS Bataan on Friday November 9.  He will also be a regular contributor on NBC Sports Radio properties commentating on the NBA and NCAA basketball.  As previously reported, Van Gundy was spurned by ESPN and it is alleged that David Stern and the league conspired to keep him off any NBA national broadcast.

USA Today's Michael Hiestand's media post is reporting Charles Barkely will work two games on TNT in the coming months.  Sir Charles will work the Spurs-Heat contest on November 29th and the Lakers vs. Knicks in New York on Decemeber 13. No word on who Barkely will work with in the booth.  It also noted TNT added former Laker and actor Rick Fox to its TNT and NBA TV shows as an analyst.

Also, TNT announced that the November 1st Knicks-Nets opener at the Barclay's Center cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, will be rescheduled on Monday night November 26th.

ESPN has also added 2 new analysts to its increasing NBA coverage.  Former head coach Flip Saunders and former all-star forward Antonio Davis have signed on as studio analyst for WWL. This is the latest in the ESPN's expansion of their NBA coverage including the additions of former referee Steve Javie, former NBA executive Tom Penn and the revamping of its NBA pregame showESPN's coverage of the NBA starts tonight with the premier of NBA Countdown, with the debuting Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose joining Michael Wilbon and Magic Johnson, followed by doubleheader action between the Heat and Knicks in New York and the Clippers versus the Lakers in Los Angeles.

Greg Anthony will join the YES Network as an analyst for Brooklyn Nets coverage.  The former UNLV gaurd will join Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkle and Mike Fratello calling game action for the network.  Anthony will continue his NBA duties on TNT & NBA TV, as well as studio/game analyst for CBS's college basketball coverage.
