News & Notes: NBC Boxing; MLB on FOX

NBC Boxing
NBC will use a trifecta of legendary broadcasters for their next Prime Time Boxing Event. Marv Albert, Bob Costas and Al Michaels will work NBC's Premier Boxing Champions on NBC broadcast on Saturday night April 11th from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.  As in their last broadcast, Albert will have the blow by blow of each fight, while Michaels will host.  Costas will contribute to the broadcast narrating a special feature on the history of boxing in New York City.  

The card will feature Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) vs. Lamont Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs), and newly crowned WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) vs. Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs).

MLB on FOX
FOX Sports have announced their broadcasters for the 2015 coverage of MLB on FOX & FOX Sports 1.  Former Major League Raul Ibanez will join the network as an analyst.  Ibanez, last with the Royals, was a candidate for the Tampa Bay Rays managerial position.  He will join MLB Whiparound, MLB on FOX pregame and other FS1 properties.  Also joining will be Joe Davis (who debuted last September on MLB and College Football broadcasts) and Seattle Mariners radio broadcaster Aaron Goldsmtih.  Mark Sweeny will also contribute in the studio.

MLB on FOX's  will return lead team Joe Buck, Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci, with Ken Rosenthal and Erin Andrews as reporters.

2014 MLB Television Primer

ESPN

This will be the 25th season of Major League Baseball on ESPN, with games once again scheduled on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday nights. Sunday nights games are nationally exclusive, while weekday games will have less local blackouts. Sunday Night Baseball premieres on Opening Night Sunday March 30th with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the San Diego Padres at 8 p.m. That will be followed by 5 Opening Day games on Monday March 31st on ESPN and ESPN2.

Curt Schilling joins Sunday Night Baseball (replacing Orel Hershiser) with Dan Shulman, John Kruk & Buster Olney and will return after he recovers from cancer treatment (ESPN announced their will be no replacement during his absence). Baseball Tonight airs nightly at 10 PM & Midnight and Sundays before and after SNB. Sunday’s Baseball Tonight is rebranded as Sunday Night Countdown.

ESPN will air games on national holidays including Memorial Day, the Fourth of July & Labor Day. The Home Run Derby will air the night before the All-Star Game at Target Field on July 14th ESPN will air one Wild Card Play in Game in October of one league, and will have exclusive coverage of the entire MLB Postseason on ESPN Radio

FOX SPORTS

This will be the 19th season of MLB on FOX; 15th consecutive World Series (17 total). FOX and FOX Sports 1 will split a 52-game schedule. FOX will air eight primetime games between May 24-July 12 and four games in September. There will be 20 Saturday doubleheaders; half split between FS1 & FOX with the other half all on FS1. All FS1 games will be non-exclusive, co-exists with local broadcasts.

FOX will have exclusive coverage of the All-Star Game in Minneapolis on July 15th and the World Series in October. FOX & FOX Sports 1 will split have coverage of two League Divisional Series and the entire League Championship Series.

Harold Reynolds & Tom Verducci join Joe Buck as main broadcast team replacing Tim McCarver. The three will call all the major events on MLB on FOX including the All-Star Game and World Series with Ken Rosenthal and Erin Andrews as reporters. Matt Vasgersian & John Smoltz will be second tier team. Kevin Burkhardt will be the host of FOX Sports MLB pregame show with rotating analysts including new FOX hires Frank Thomas and C.J. Nitkowski.

Ryan Field and Chris Myers will split hosting duties on the new daily baseball show, MLB WhipAround, on FOX Sports 1 at 8 and 10 p.m. competing against MLB Tonight and Baseball Tonight.

MLB Network

MLB Network will air 24 hour baseball coverage throughout the regular and postseason.  MLB Tonight airs nightly as the pregame, in game and post game studio show for every major league game.  Quick Pitch closes each night with the day’s highlights & in progress during late games.  New programming this spring includes MLB High Heat with Sirius XM's Christopher 'Mad Dog' Russo.

MLB Network airs 30-40 games a month including the network produced Showcase games scheduled for  several games a month and live simulcasts 3-5 dates a week. This season, they will air Sunday afternoon games weekly, until TBS returns. Strike Zone (on cable/satellite) will return with coverage games on Tuesday and Friday nights (MLB's answer to NFL Red Zone).  MLB Network will once again air two division series games in October, leased from FOX Sports.

TBS will air only 13 Sunday afternoons (without local blackouts) starting in July through the end of the season.  They will air the entire postseason of one league including the Wild Card Tie Breaker, Two Divisional Series and the League Championship Series in its entirety.  Sunday MLB on TBS schedule will be announced in the summer

2014 MLB on FOX Broadcast Talent

As a follow up their announcement of their broadcast schedule, FOX Sports announced their talent for 2014 MLB season on FOX and FOX Sports 1. As previously been reported, MLB Network's Harold Reynolds and Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci will join Joe Buck as the main commentators for baseball in 2014. Reynolds, who has been working at MLBN since its inception in 2009, has been courted by FOX since the end of last season to replace Tim McCarver, who left the FOX broadcast after last season. (He will work a limited schedule for FOX Sports-Midwest). Verducci, who was considered a finalist as well, has worked several different roles in telecasts for FOX, MLBN and TBS as studio and game analyst as well as field reporter during the post season. The three man booth will have the call for select telecasts of the Game of the Week, the 2014 All-Star in Minneapolis in July and the postseason including the 2014 World Series. They will be joined by field reporters Ken Rosenthal and Erin Andrews for select games during the season and all of October. The trios first game assignment will be April 5th contest between the Dodgers and Giants on FOX Sports 1.

Reynolds and Verducci will continue to work at MLBN and Sports Illustrated respectively. It is unknown if Verducci will return to TBS, but not likely.

FOX has also announced the creation of two shows from their Los Angeles studios. Kevin Burkhardt, fresh off completing an impressive rookie season on FOX's NFL coverage, will host a half hour pregame show before each game. He will be joined by analysts FOX Sports Live's Gabe Kapler, the newest FOX hire, Hall of Famer inductee Frank Thomas, MLB on FOX's Eric Karros and/or former big league C.J. Notkowski. The past two seasons, FOX and MLB Network had a working agreement to host the pregame, but with the show will now be wholly produced by FOX. Ryan Field will be host for games on weeknights.

Finally, in direct competition to ESPN's staple Baseball Tonight and MLB Network's MLB Tonight, FOX Sports 1 will present MLB WhipAround on FOX Sports 1. Field or Chris Myers will host a nightly baseball recap with the aforementioned analysts Mondays thru Friday at 10 p.m. (most Wednesday it will at Midnight after UFC coverage).  The show will be a late night recap of the games of the night as well as break in coverage, mostly of FOX RSN games.
 
Kenny Albert and Thom Brennaman will return as secondary commentators and will like by joined by John Smotz. Though it has not been confirmed as of yet, Smoltz is close to signing on as secondary analyst to the A team. The former Braves starter/closer has worked mainly as a game analyst for TBS and worked occasional games on FOX and MLBN. Smoltz and TBS failed to come to an agreement before the end of last season and his last assignment for Turner was the B-series during the postseason.
